Introduction

ARCHON is the Dutch inter-university research and graduate school of archaeology that unites staff members, PhD researchers and Research MA students of its participating institutions: the UvA, VU, RUG, UL and RCE (State Service for Cultural Heritage). Joint workshops and seminars, lecture series and conferences for RMA students and PhD researchers are coordinated or organised by the research school– creating a platform for a fruitful academic debate on current archaeological research issues.

ARCHON’s full education programme is broad, comprising various kinds of educational set-ups and goals, offering general workshops, conferences, and expert meetings that focus on deepening a specific topic.

ARCHON offers educational activities open for RMA students and PhD researchers who are registered members of the school. On request non-registered RMA students and PhD researchers may participate as well. The curriculum consists of selected courses that are organised ‘locally’, by one of the partner institutions, and events organised by ARCHON specifically for its graduate students.
The courses offered by the participating institutions vary in theme and specialisation field, and are generally aimed at their own graduate students. These activities include ‘round table’ expert discussion meetings. The ARCHON- organised activities are complimentary to these local activities and entail general themes, of interest to all graduate students (material culture, landscape, funerary practices, mobility & exchange, cultural identity), master-classes and one-day workshops chaired by international renowned guest speakers.

ARCHON brings together junior and senior researchers in archaeology to allow a fruitful exchange of opinions. To this end, most ARCHON activities are also open to the staff of university institutes and archaeologists with a doctorate degree working outside the academic world.

All ARCHON education is taught in English.
