Merel will facilitate the Consolidating Empire research and develop the Late Bronze Age database of Tell Sabi Abyad. She will also work on the stratigraphy and architecture of the Dunnu,  preparing these data for further analysis by finalising the plans of the consecutive settlement phases and integrating the phase descriptions per trench into settlement-wide reports.

Merel has excavated at Tell Sabi Abyad since 1999, in both the Late Bronze Age fortress and the Late Neolithic settlements. From 2001 onwards she has been working in the National Museum of Antiquities on the stratigraphy and architecture of the Late Bronze Age and of Late Neolithic Operation I (" the burnt village"), in addition to organizing fieldwork logistics and facilitating other research.
